Allergy shots will reduce the risk of taking medications for long-term and when the normal medication does not control the symptoms caused by various allergens. Also, it reduces the impact on the immune system and helps prevent further damage caused by long-term medications. Usually, allergies are contagious and are not comfortable with a group of people. Allergy shots will help reduce the severity and provide essential relief.
Vaccine for Allergy in India
Subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) vaccine also known as allergy shot or anti-allergic vaccine, work is a long-term prevention of asthma, rhinitis or allergy caused by insect stings. This vaccine is also used to control the seasonal allergies caused by dust mites, pollen, and pollution. The process of immunizing the body over a long period of time through allergy shots is termed as immunotherapy.
Side Effects of SCIT and schedule & Cost
SCIT side effects include anaphylaxis that has been rarely recorded. Anaphylaxis is associated with food, insect stings, medication, and latex. This needs immediate medical attention. Other side effects include redness at the site of the injection. In some cases, children/adult may experience increased sneezing, watery eyes, nasal congestion, and rashes. These will occur within 30 minutes of the injection. Usually, the doctor will ask to wait for 30 minutes after the injection is administered. The administration can be started at 12 years of age through adulthood. The dosage is split into two phases. In the first phase, the injection is given once a week for first 7 months under allergy specialist observation. The booster dose is given every 2 weeks.

Precautions for SCIT Vaccine
Before starting the course the doctor must test the skin to determine if any allergic reactions caused by a specific allergen and note down the symptoms. Post the doctor validation only, one must proceed to receive the allergy shots.
Who should not take the SCIT allergy shot
- Pre-term infants and pregnant women should consult a doctor for the allergy shots.
- If a person is suffering from psoriasis, the doctor should approve the skin test and ensure the person will not be allergic to the shot.
- If a person has missed the allergy shots then the dosage and strength may need change. One must consult the doctor on the same.
- If a person is suffering from severe asthma.
- If a person is taking blood pressure medications. Please consult with a doctor.
- If a person has historical cardiac arrest or any severe sickness. Please consult with a doctor.
If the allergy shots do not work after the complete dose, the physician/doctor should provide other alternate solution. The allergy will not stop immediately. It will improve during the first year of treatment and the following year is more successful.
India has high pollution due to which allergy attacks become common. All age groups must consult a doctor and enroll themselves in government accredited immunotherapy program to avoid any severe illness.
